Chinese Herbs for Healthy Holiday Meals
Cooking and entertaining for friends and family over the holidays is one of my favorite things to do. Creating traditional holiday meals with a healthy Chinese twist can help you stay more vibrant and energetic during the often over-indulgent holiday season.
Here’s how you can add the healing powers of the East to your next gathering:
Calming herbal flower tea: When your guests arrive, offer them a cup of hot calming tea, and enjoy a cup with your guests. It contain rose, which calms the mind and stomach, and will help everyone relax after a hectic day of traveling or busy holiday preparation.
Goji Berries: For a healthy and delicious appetizer, serve these red berries on a green plate for a festive holiday touch. Just as you would serve raisins or dried cranberries, pass around a plate of goji berries, also known as wolfberries. Considered by many to be the most nutritionally rich fruit, goji berries are full of amino acids, minerals and vitamins. Loaded with vitamin A, they also help prevent colds and respiratory infections. Soak the berries in water for 10 minutes, and you can include in stuffing and salad for extra flavor and nutrition.
Smooth herbal flower tea: This medicinal flower tea can provide relief from the initial mild onset of a common cold during the winter and its liver flushing effects make it the perfect tea to drink after alcohol consumption during the holidays.
Many people tend to eat and drink more during the holiday season than the rest of year, which results in indigestion, and even feelings of stiffness and heaviness after overindulging. To help patients avoid the uncomfortable side effects of holiday celebrations, I have prepared two herbal formulas:
Happy Eating Herbal Formula: This formula helps break down all the various foods and sweets we tend to eat (everything from turkey and stuffing to pumpkin pie), to prevent abdominal bloating and discomfort after a full meal and keep your body happy.
Friendly Cheer Herbal Formula: This formula helps your liver eliminate and process alcohol more efficiently to prevent having a heavy, achy head or stiff body the next day.
All of the teas and special holiday herbal formulas are available through my office.
Christmas is just around the corner; give your family and friends a healthy gift this year!
