Honor Your Body
Weight Loss with the Chopstick Diet Solution

If you’re like many people, there’s a good chance that one of your New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight. Whether you want to lose substantial pounds or just those last few that won’t budge, weight loss continues to be the popular subject of many books, television programs and specialized diet plans. (Not to mention all of the “low fat” packaged foods readily available in almost any grocery store!)

Yet despite the huge marketing success of diet programs, the only way many people seem to lose weight long-term is when their pocketbooks become lighter from purchasing all of these products. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), one-third of all adults in the United States are overweight, and another one-third are obese.

So why is it so difficult to lose weight? From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, everything in life should be enjoyed in moderation. Anything done in extreme—such as diets with all protein, all carbs, no carbs, etc.—simply cannot last and succeed. In this line of thinking, I have a new weight loss approach to suggest: the chopstick diet.

Almost every diet program addresses the food you eat, but none—until now—looks at the tools you use to eat with. I recently read “Mindless Eating” by Brian Wansink, Ph.D., and a particular paragraph caught my eye. In his book, this expert in psychological eating points out that most people who eat with chopsticks have normal weight patterns.

Why? Eating with chopsticks requires more attention than eating with a fork, which causes you to eat at a more appropriate pace. Chopsticks can also only pick up small amounts of food at a time, which helps you manage portions. Eat more slowly, eat less per bite, and you will most likely lose weight. And you will taste the flavor of each morsel.

Growing up in Taiwan, I was taught to use chopsticks at meals. Since I continue to eat with chopsticks today, I am usually the last person to finish a meal. Over the years, I am sure this technique has helped me keep off unwanted pounds.

Remember, chopsticks can be used to eat any kind of food, not just Chinese meals. If you would like to learn how use chopsticks to jump-start your “lose weight” New Year’s resolution, call my office and please come to the Chopstick Diet workshop for a lesson!
