Happy Chinese New Year! Celebrate
a Year of Healthy Eating
Xīnnián kuàilè! Mandarin for “Happy
New Year,” this is pronounced as “seen nian
kwai luh.” The Chinese New Year is approaching.
According to the lunar calendar, we will officially enter
4076, or the Year of the Earth Rat, on February 7.
The rat is the first animal of the 12-year zodiac cycle, making this
is a time for new beginnings. Rats are known for their
tenacity and enterprising cleverness, positive traits for starting
new ventures and achieving goals. This is a year to experiment, take
chances and put plans into action. Projects launched in the coming
months are likely to have long-term consequences, however, so channel
your energies wisely.
After two fast-paced Fire years, we are entering a calmer and more
consolidating Earth year. According to the Chinese Five
Elements, earth always follows fire. Since the Earth element is associated
with practicality and stability, you will find things to be more steady,
practical and balanced.
In terms of health, the Earth, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine,
is closely linked with the digestive system. This year, it is especially
important to watch what you eat to keep your body functioning properly.
The Earth also represents the importance of staying grounded, which
can lead to many good things, but also inactivity and weight gain.
More than ever, exercise will be crucial for proper weight management.
To help jump start the Year of the Rat, I will
be launching a series of monthly newsletters that specifically focus
on how eating affects the mind and body. Here’s a glimpse at what’s
to come:
