'Tis the Season…to Self Nurture
Through many years of practice, one of the most important lessons I have learned is that when I do not take care of myself, I am not able to take care of others. Like many of you, I learned this the hard way--by trying to do too much for too many while neglecting myself. Today, especially around the holidays, I constantly remind myself that the best gift I can give others is to keep myself physically fit, emotionally happy and mentally sharp and clear. The holiday season is here, and many of you are struggling to balance work, family, social obligations and gift shopping—all in the midst of struggling economic and political times. So here are a few of my self-nurturing secrets to help you generate a vibrant energy and joyful spirit to share with others:
- Enjoy the quietness. Give yourself the gift of 10 or 15 minutes of peaceful time each day.
- Remind yourself of all you have to be thankful for, especially friends and family.
- Give gifts from the heart. People value what's in your soul, not the amount you spend.
- Breathe into your body so your mind and body are more in touch with each other.
- Fill your mind with positive, happy thoughts. Smiling while picturing cheerful images is a powerful way to reverse harmful stress hormones caused by tension.
- Enjoy an afternoon of acupuncture, acupressure or massage to keep your channels of energy open and flowing.
This year, I am going to practice what I preach by celebrating the holidays from December 20 – January 5, during which time my office staff and I will take time to rest and rejuvenate. I hope that you will also use this time to re-charge so that we can welcome 2009 with happy, positive energy.
In the meantime, I wish you a wonderful, joyous holiday season.
Happy Holidays!
