Acid Reflux Disease

More than 60 million American adults suffer from acid reflux disease at least once a month, according to medical experts. Without proper treatment, this disease can cause varying degrees of discomfort, including heartburn, bloating, flatulence and achy joints.

Also known as "gastroesophageal reflux disease," acid reflux occurs when food that has been consumed and is in the stomach splashes back up into the esophagus. While the stomach is protected from digestive acids by a special lining, the esophagus is easily burned.

When it comes to treating acid reflux, traditional Western medicine focuses on over-the-counter and prescription medications designed to neutralize stomach acids. While this approach alleviates many symptoms, the primary problem continues to exist. The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is still weakened, and food will continue to pass back up into the esophagus. Conversely, Chinese medicine focuses on helping the entire digestive process to once again function efficiently and effectively, helping all consumed food be turned into nutrients that fuel the body.

People who are overweight and women who are pregnant are especially susceptible to acid reflux disease. Whether you suffer from acid reflux regularly or only occasionally, here are a few tips to help:

  • Focus on the Experience of Eating. In these modern times, eating often becomes a multitasking, juggling event. Instead of trying to participate in a conference call, feed a baby or do laundry as you eat, sit down and savor your meals. Allowing your mind and body to enjoy the full sensory appreciation of meals will help your esophagus and other digestive organs stay healthy and strong.
  • Monitor Your Diet. Avoid food and beverages that can weaken the esophagus, including chocolate, peppermint, fatty foods, coffee and alcoholic beverages.
  • Stop Smoking. Cigarette smoking has also been linked to the weakening of the esophagus.
  • Look to Natural Remedies. All-natural, herbal remedies can help alleviate many of the symptoms associated with acid reflux disease.
  • Restore Internal Harmony. For acid reflux sufferers, stress, anxiety and other external factors can all play a role in the malfunctioning of the esophagus. Acupuncture and/or acupressure can help restore the natural balance of the digestive system, as well as your body's other internal workings
