Derived from the Greek words for work (ergon) and natural laws (nomoi), ergonomics is the study and control of posture, stresses, motions and other physical forces on the human body engaged in work. Today, more companies than ever are taking pro-active steps to prevent work-related injuries, demonstrating their commitment to a productive, injury-free workforce.
Dr. Wonson emphasizes comfort, health and safety in the workplace to prevent strains and injuries, which can range from carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, and neck and shoulder pain to damaged ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. Her multifaceted approach incorporates three primary aspects: the position and alignment of the body, the equipment being used and an overall environmental assessment. With computers dominating the professional workplace, Dr. Wonson places a particular emphasis on repetitive motions, computer placement, proper posture and the effect of force on fingers, hands and wrists. Specialized exercise techniques are often prescribed, along with ergonomically designed chairs and computer keyboards. By helping patients observe and use their bodies in a new way, Dr. Wonson helps to significantly improve joint and muscle functioning while reducing workplace injuries, helping employees function more efficiently and effectively.
